My Experience
Being a Chaldean Catholic myself in the Metro Detroit area, my experience has been based on faith, family and culture. Growing up in the Metro Detroit area, St. George Chaldean Catholic Church was not just a place to go and pray, but a place where I can connect with God and volunteer with other people in the community to help others. I also celebrated holidays, weddings, and other events which are always great to attend. My family taught me how important it is to preserve out traditions such as our language Sureth (Aramaic) and dishes such as dolma. Participating in these events has always just been such a fun experience and shows how important it is to preserve it. Being a Chaldean Catholic in Metro Detroit has made me so grateful to be part of such a great community.
My Dads Experience
My dad's experience as a Chaldean has been based off his journey of migrating from Iraq to Metro Detroit. He shared stories of his life in Iraq where faith and family were just as important as in Metro Detroit. My dad told me how there was a war going on and surviving was the most important thing. The only thing he wanted to do was leave Iraq and start a better life with his family elsewhere. When he immigrated to Metro Detroit, he faced the challenges of starting over in a whole new country. Through hard work and dedication he built a life for himself and also contributed to the Metro Detroit community by supporting businesses and going to church events. Being a Chaldean in Metro Detroit is something my dad is so grateful and proud of. For him, being Chaldean means to practice our religion and follow the traditions we love so much. I am very thankful for the sacrifices my dad had to make to be where he is today.
