About the Chaldean Catholic Community in Metro Detroit

The Chaldean Catholic Community in Metro Detroit are a group or immigrants who are mostly refugees from the country Iraq. The Chaldean community speaks the language Sureth which is a form of (Aramaic). The Chaldeans migrated from Iraq to Metro Detroit as refugees, driven by faith, cultural preservation, and the search of a better life. It wasn't a very easy journey as the Chaldean News article "From Mesopotamia to the Motor City" says that, "In the early 1900s, travel was much more difficult than it is today. The earliest Chaldeans would have to trek through the Middle East, through Marseille, France, and take a ship through the Strait of Gibraltar. Eventually, some made it to Ellis Island and traveled to Detroit for opportunity. Others would continue the journey by boat to Mexico to meet up with Lebanese and Syrian immigrants." The Chaldean Catholic Church itself is the most important part of the community. The community focuses on persevering its traditions and faith while also making contributions to the area's culture and economy. Although the Chaldeans are immigrants, the impact to the Metro Detroit area and economy should be recognized and appreciated.
